Prague Castle
The ancient Prague Castle, established in the 9th century, is one of the city's true treasures. This site has seen many different buildings erected, with the final version of the castle that is seen today built during the 15th century. A fire destroyed much of the castle in 1541, and reconstruction was completed in the 1600's. The castle now serves as both the political and historical center of the Czech Republic, and is the seat of the President.
Much of the castle's premises is open to the public, and should not be missed while visiting the Old Town part of the city. The Old Royal Palace area is one of the best parts of the Castle. In the heart of the Palace is the beautiful Vladislav Hall, a striking example of Gothic architecture. It is the largest profane hall of medieval Prague, and is still used as the site of presidential elections.
What was once the castle's stables now holds the palace's art gallery. Works by Tintoretto and Tizian can be found here, as well as exquisite examples of Czech Baroque art. Queen Anna's Summer House is one of the most beautiful renaissance buildings in Prague, and is home to the famous 'musical fountain', a artistic feat that creates music with the sounds of its waterdrops. The Royal Gardens, founded in 1534, make for a beautiful walk, and are immaculately kept. Children will want to visit the former Burgrave's house, which houses the Museum of Toys. The coronation jewels can be viewed in the Lobkovic Palace, along with other priceless treasures of Czech History.
